And this is the catalyst for everything that happened afterwards. But of course, something goes wrong for the narrator. These letters are intended to lead them to new penpals. Like in “Balloons”, the narrator took part in a classroom activity where the students write letters and attach them to balloons to be released. Told in a non-linear format, each chapter features a specific occurrence that happened during the narrator’s childhood. This book expanded on the plot even more. I’ve actually read one of the chapters, “Balloons”, and I remember it freaked me out. Penpal was originally part of a creepypasta series submitted to the NoSleep subreddit. You just have to know what you’re looking for, and when you do, suddenly it’s all you can see. And what he discovers will change him forever. Though I was a little apprehensive about the mention of crime fiction, the lure of Provence proved too strong…Ĭharity Selborne is a grieving young war widow holidaying in Avignon with her friend Louise. Such is the power of appearances! I had never heard of Mary Stewart before but a quick Google search revealed she is a well-known mystery and crime fiction writer, that she has been hugely successful ever since the publication of Madam, Will You Talk? in 1955, and that one of her other novels was even made into a Hollywood film starring Haley Mills. I discovered Madam, Will You Talk? on another blog and it was, I confess, the beautiful new book cover Hodder & Stoughton designed for the novel’s reissue that seduced me. ![]() It’s a hot sunny day in Paris (finally! The little girl thinks this is both happy and sad, but is very happy that the Hello, Goodbye Window will always be waiting for her when she comes back. Eventually, the little girl’s time at her grandparents’ house is over and her parents come to pick her up. She loves to think that anyone could pass by the Hello, Goodbye Window, and spends a lot of time just sitting next to it and imagining the range of people and animals who could come by. During the day, the little girl tells us about playing in her grandma’s garden and getting sprayed with the hose by Grandpa. The little girl loves playing in the kitchen, listening to her grandpa play the harmonica, and pretending that the window is a mirror when it gets dark outside. She explains that the Hello, Goodbye Window might be a normal kitchen window to others, but it is special because it is where she and her grandparents can spend extra time together. This is the story of a little girl and her adventures at her grandparents’ house.
